John Perley Dicus Obituary (Age 78) John passed away quietly in his Spokane Valley home on July 21, 2017 after a long battle with pancreatic cancer. He was born in Omak, WA on October 15, 1938 and was the oldest of three children born to Mark and Marian Dicus. John grew up in Bonners Ferry, ID and graduated from Bonners Ferry High School in 1957. He worked at various jobs before joining the Air Force in 1961. He married Raellen Reed and they had two children; Don and Christine. The family lived in the Spokane Valley, where they were active in their church and scouting. John enjoyed bowling and square dancing and was an avid gardener. He won many awards for his prize vegetables at the fair. John and Raellen divorced after 27 years. He later married Verna (Krogh) who had a daughter, Carrie and a son, Grover from a previous marriage. He worked for Central Valley School District before retiring in 2006. In retirement, he continued his gardening, but also enjoyed bicycling, walking his dogs, camping and caring for his grandchildren. He loved to watch old westerns and football, as well as any sport in which his grandchildren participated. He also pitched a mean game of horseshoes. John collected belt buckles, caps, hats, movies and anything John Wayne. He collected many loyal friends as well, who supported him throughout his illness. He will be greatly missed by all. John is survived by his wife of 25 years, Verna; his son, Don (Kim) Dicus; daughter, Christine (Bob) Springsteen; stepdaughter, Carrie (Morgan) Koudelka; stepson, Grover (Hallie) Krogh; grandchildren, Christopher, Benjamin, Emily Joy, Emily Grace, Noah, Leilah; and new great grandson, Mason. He is also survived by his brother, Everett Dicus; sister, Eva Bell; aunt, Ina Hanford; aunt, Lucille (Bill) Alexander; mother-in-law, Evelyn Thompson; as well as many cousins, nieces and nephews. The family extends a special thank you to Hospice of Spokane for keeping John comfortable; physically as well as spiritually in his final days. The battle was long and hard, but John is finally at peace. The family is hosting a Celebration of Life which will be on Sunday, October 15, 2017 at 2:00 pm. It will be held at Broadway Elementary located at 11016 E Broadway in Spokane Valley.
