John Roy Neff

John Roy Neff was the kindest of men—patient, hard-working, full of life, and always with a sparkle in his eyes. His quiet strength and gentle spirit touched everyone who knew him.

Born Feb 2, 1923 in Spokane, WA to Roy and Louise Neff, and died April 30, 2025. John was raised in Spokane, Washington, where he attended Finch Elementary, Havermale Junior High, and North Central High School. In 1942, he joined the U.S. Army, eventually being stationed in India during World War II.

John was married to his one true love, Bette, for an incredible 78 years. The two built a beautiful life together, raising three children and sharing countless adventures. Bette preceded John in death by just six months, a reflection of their inseparable bond.

John began his career in the grocery business working alongside his father at a neighborhood store in West Central Spokane. He later joined Albertsons, where he worked until his retirement in 1985. In their later years, John and Bette became snowbirds, spending winters in Sun Lakes, Arizona, where they enjoyed bridge, made new friends, became active in a new church community, and John took great joy in playing golf under the Arizona sun.

He gave his love freely—especially to his family and friends—and was deeply loved in return. John’s 102 years were a testament to a life well-lived and generously shared.

John is preceded in death by his beloved wife Bette, their son David, and his sister Joy Voelker. He is survived by his daughters Nadine Sturm (Paul) and Nancy Logan; grandchildren Britt Neff, John Neff (Heidi), Kyle Nelson, Rhett Nelson (Tara), Jonathan Nelson (Eileen), Kelsey Scherler, Jake Scherler; and numerous cherished nieces, nephews, and great-grandchildren.

The family wishes to thank the wonderful staff and residents of Fairwood and Fairwinds for their warm care and community, and Horizon Hospice for the comfort and peace they provided John and his family in his final weeks.
