Joseph D. Cadwallader Obituary OBITUARY OF JOSEPH DALE CADWALLADER Joseph Dale Cadwallader, son of Miles E. Sr. and Fay Babbitt Cadwallader was born on the family farm near Oxford, Furnas County, NE on October 19, 1934, and died on October 26, 2023 in Spokane, WA. Joe received a conservative upbringing in the Oxford Presbyterian and Methodist Churches and education at Oxford public schools. Upon graduation he wasted two years at the University of Nebraska, and one year working for Tinys Electric Wholesale in Lincoln, NE before enlisting in the United States Air Force. Joes first airplane ride was traveling to Parks Air Force Base near Pleasanton, CA where he learned to hate the early morning fog. His second flight was when he was transferred to Keesler Field, Biloxi, MS where he loved the white beaches and warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico. He also began a love affair with the beauty of electronics and intricacies of Airborne Radar not only as a student but also as instructor. A fortuitous wink on the streets of New Orleans, LA led to his marriage one year later to Maria Natalie Lovoi, daughter of Joseph A. and Francis Noto Lovoi on September 2, 1956, after Joe chose Maria over an appointment to the Air Force Academy. Maria was his true and loyal lover and companion for 64 years, having died July 6, 2020. Their honeymoon was spent driving to his next assigned base, F.E. Warren A.F.B., Cheyenne, WY. Their union produced seven children. Sons Dale Joseph Cadwallader of Moncure, NC, and Brian Anthony (Desiree`) Cadwallader of Coon Rapids, MN, were born in Cheyenne, WY. The remaining five were born in New Orleans, LA. They are Diane Cadwallader (Ricky) Roussel of Argyle, TX, Wanda Jean Cadwallader of Kennewick, WA, Gwen Natalie Cadwallader of Spokane Valley, WA, Fay Margaret Cadwallader of Spokane, WA, and James Edward (Sunny) Cadwallader of Spokane, WA. At the completion of his military obligation, Joe found work with A&P Tea Company, then Touro Hospital, and finally with Kaiser Aluminum and Chemical Corporation at Chalmette, LA. He became proficient in the maintenance and repair of the plants overhead cranes, learning to tolerate the summer temperatures up to 135 degrees Fahrenheit above the electrolytic cells smelting aluminum. Joe was offered a position as a rotating shift first-line supervisor (foreman). This individual was the senior salaried employee on site during the night shifts and on weekends. Though overwhelmed at first, he grew to love the job as well as in his dependence upon the Heavenly Father for decision making. Because of some serious problems with the plant cranes, Joe was asked to become the crane supervisor. He held that position until the plant was closed in 1984 due to the rising cost of power production. Joe stayed two more years at the Chalmette Works, mothballing equipment and/or shipping movable property to other locations. He was then offered a position as maintenance supervisor at the Kaiser Aluminum and Chemical Mead Works near Spokane, WA, serving there as a maintenance supervisor until his retirement in May 1999. Though never being elevated beyond first level supervision, Joe was chosen by Kaiser for observational and/or training missions in Europe. These trips included visits to Pechiney Aluminum at Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne, France; to Anglesey Aluminum at Holyhead, Wales, Great Britain; to ECL Crane Company at Lille, France; to Hannifin Hydraulics at Geneva, Switzerland and Annecy, France; and to Norsk Hydro Aluminum at Hyanger, rdal, and vre rdal, Norway. Despite his obligations to his large family and his work, Joe was active in the community. He was a deacon at Our Lady of Prompt Succor Catholic Church in Chalmette, LA. He was a volunteer deputy sheriff in St. Bernard Parish, LA. He served as Assistant Cubmaster and Webelos leader for Scout Cub Pack 236. In the late 1960s, Joe became Scoutmaster for Boy Scout Troop 49. Under Joe, many young men achieved the rank of Eagle Scout, including seven at once in a memorable ceremony in 1972 where the key speaker was Lt. Governor Jimmy Fitzmorris. In the 1970s, Joe and Maria became part of the Catholic Charismatic community at Our Lady of Prompt Succor Church where Joe fell in love with his Savior, Jesus Christ, accepted him as Savior and Lord and has attempted to follow Him since then. The family became affiliated with the First Assembly of God Church and school in New Orleans under Pastor Marvin E. Gorman, where Maria received her credentials as a preacher for The Assemblies of God. Following his transfer to Spokane, Joe and his family attended Mountain View Assembly of God where Joe served as a board member. After retiring, Joe and Maria formed a Christian ministry of their own, known as We Care Ministries. They conducted Sunday worship services in retirement and nursing facilities in the Spokane area and weekday visitations. This ministry grew to thirty-seven individuals acting as Ministers of the Gospel serving fifteen facilities weekly. Joe is preceded in death by his parents, Miles E. Sr. and Fay Babbitt Cadwallader, his brother Miles Cadwallader Jr., by sisters Joy Cadwallader Fertitta and Maxine Cadwallader Moran, and by his wife of 64 years, Maria Lovoi Cadwallader.
