Kenneth C. Hines Obituary (Age 93) Ken went to be with the Lord on July 20, 2017. He was born to Carl and Olive Hines in Tonasket, WA on July 27, 1923. He graduated North Central H.S, Spokane, in 1942 and entered WSU that fall. He enlisted in the Army Air Corp in 1943. In 1944, he completed flight training and married Patricia Lanning, his wife of 56 years. He was immediately deployed to Italy during WWII, completing 71 combat missions piloting B-25s. In 1945, he returned home and re-entered WSU. He joined the Air National Guard 116th Fighter Squadron flying P-51s from Felts Field. He completed studies in Chemical Engineering at WSU in 1948. In 1950, his squadron was called to active duty and he joined the 317th Fighter-Interceptor Squadron flying F-94 and F-86s on continental air defense missions from McCord AFB. In 1953, he and his father-in-law, Rush Lanning, began the first anhydrous ammonia fertilizer business in the northwest, Waverly Chemicals. The business was purchased by Cominco American in 1965. Ken loved sailing and was a member of the Spokane Sail Club and Arrowhead Beach, Inc. In 1968, he had a sailboat built in Vancouver, Canada and took this family sailing from Port Townsend to the Panama Canal over the next two years. Upon his return, he became a manager at Cominco American and retired in 1981. He continued to enjoy sailing and was an avid backpacker. He was devoted to his family and was a wonderful husband and father. Ken came to Jesus late in life, and faithfully attended First Presbyterian Church. Ken is survived by this son, Barry Hines (Marsha) of Pensacola FL, his daughter, Cynthia Pace (David) of Spokane, granddaughters, Stephanie Burdick (Brett) and Sarah Crosby (Marcel) of Spokane, and great-grandsons, Trace and Rylan Burdick.
