It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of LaVonne Phyllis Black on November 17, 2025, at the age of 92.

LaVonne was born on November 30, 1932 in Powers Lake, North Dakota, to Carl and Selma Iverson. Raised on a farm, she and her brother Bernard enjoyed playing with all of their animals and giving each a special name.  In her early years, LaVonne attended one-room country schools near Larson, ND and McGregor, ND.  When she was 10 years old, the family moved to Lignite, ND, where she graduated from Lignite High School in 1951.

LaVonne then moved to Spokane, WA at nineteen and began working as a medical office assistant in the Paulsen Building. “What a thrill” she said, of working on the 10th floor and enjoying downtown Spokane. She and three other North Dakota girlfriends rented a house and enjoyed taking trips to Canada and to the many lakes around the region.  In 1957 she met the love of her life, John F. Black, who was also from North Dakota (Minot).  They were married in November of 1958; shortly thereafter, John started his career at Old National Bank. John and LaVonne had a loving and supportive marriage of almost 59 years, until John’s passing in 2017.  Motherhood was a dream come true for her and the couple raised four wonderful children.  Family trips were special over the years and included many campouts to Sullivan Lake, along with road trips throughout the US and travels abroad.  Special memories were made at the many Black Family Reunions held in Bozeman, MT and were fondly looked back upon.

LaVonne took pleasure in crocheting, tending to her flower gardens, and watching and listening to the birds singing.  Being of Norwegian heritage, she was a member of Daughters of Norway, lodge #50. Fond of her Big Band Swing music, she’d always be looking for a dance partner.  When LaVonne had free time over the years, she would enjoy watching her favorite television programs.

LaVonne’s greatest joy was spending time with her family.  She was an incredible wife, mother, grandmother, and friend.  Deeply loved and respected, she will be remembered for her kindness and generosity.  LaVonne was known for her quick wit and was sharp as a tack until the end.  She holds a special place in our hearts and the family will forever cherish her love, laughter, and the joy she brought into our lives.

She was preceded in death by her parents Carl and Selma Iverson, brother Bernard, husband John and daughter Karla. She is survived by her children Laurie,(Rob) Rhodes, Jim Black and John (Leah) Black, as well as grandchildren Mitchell (Holly) Rhodes, Spencer Black, Elena Rhodes and Natalie Black.

There will be a private family graveside service held on December 23rd.  A celebration of life for LaVonne will be held in the summer of 2026.

In lieu of flowers, the family invites donations to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105. 1-800-805-5856. www.stjude.org/give
