Lorna E. Ream Obituary (Age 79) Lorna E. Ream, active in Spokane area civic affairs and conservation issues for more that 50 years, died Tuesday, July 27, 2010. She was born in Portland, OR, and graduated from the University of Oregon with a degree in Journalism. During that time she was editor of the college newspaper. Lorna was the first woman appointed to the former Washington State Highway Commission, served on the Advisory Committee for the Bonneville Power Administration, was a member of the City Planning Board, the Housing Appeals Board, Friends of the Public Library, and Spokane Community Action Council. She was the past president of the Spokane Chapter of the American Association of University Women. For three years she was employed by the Spokane County Department of Engineering to handle transportation issues. Lorna was passionate about mountain climbing and was a longtime active member of the Spokane Mountaineers. She climbed most of the snowcapped peaks in the Pacific Northwest but was most proud of being member of climbing the team making the first ascent of Mt. Cooper, a previously unclimbed 10,000-foot peak in British Columbia. Lorna is survived by her husband, Joel; her son, Joel E. Ream of St. Louis, MO; her daughter, Lyn Rika Ream of Fremont, CA; two granddaughters; and her brother Louis Larson of Newberg, OR. Spokane Hospice helped her through her final days. Arrangements are being handled through Heritage Funeral Home. At her request, there will be no services.
