Lucy Squire was born and raised in Ohio, the oldest of four children.  She earned her Registered Nurse Bachelor of Science degree at University of Cincinnati, then earned a Master of Public Health degree at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor.  This is where she met and married Dan Bates and met many lifelong friends she still adores today.  During their 26-year marriage, they raised two daughters, Jackie Bates, and Vickie Cox, and they were heavily involved with the Schweitzer Alpine racing school (SARS), work, and other volunteer activities.  Lucy worked as the Director of Nursing for Washington County Health Department, the clinical director for Hospice of Spokane, a supervisor for the Visiting Nurse Association in MI, and served as a surveyor for Joint Commission to name a few.  She also volunteered many hours at SARS, served on the board of directors for the YMCA, the Visiting nurse association, the Bing Crosby Theatre, Community Minded Enterprises, Providence Services, and Eastern Washington health systems agency.

Lucy's life highlights include raising Vickie, Jackie and the Newfoundland dogs, especially Puff.  She loved cooking and baking, reading and movies, and rollercoasters!  You could hear her all over Cedar Point when she would ride the big ones.  She also absolutely loved the water, snorkeling, and scuba diving, and found peace and adventure swimming with fish, sharks, and anything that came her way.

Her second and third husbands, Luke Williams, and Jim Squire, traveled with Mom to 109 countries on 7 continents, and visited 48 of the 50 states.  She could go anywhere and do anything, and some of the highlights include helicopter rides over Victoria Falls, the Mendenhall glacier, and the Napali coast.  She took boats to Iguassu Falls, Niagara Falls, and the Milford sound, and she climbed the Harbor bridge in Sydney and the Great wall of China.  Mom attended the inauguration of President George Bush and danced at the Vienna Balls. She cruised the Amazon and Nile rivers and visited China, India, Tibet, and Thailand.  She loved spending family time at the San Diego Zoo and Legoland with her grandkids Codi and Danny.  Mom had a zest for life that was intoxicating, she could go, go, go.  Her love and enthusiasm for life will be greatly missed, but was passed along to the people she loved, so it is not lost, but continues in us.

Mom passed away Monday July 13, from complications from cancer, heart failure, and a stroke, and is survived by daughters Jackie and Vickie, husband Jim Squire, former husband Dan Bates, son in laws Greg Hughes, Sam Cox, and grandkids Danny and Codi.

Her funeral will be Tuesday, August 4th, 2026, at Heritage Funeral and Cremation. 508 N. Government Way. Spokane, WA.  9:30 am-10:30 am viewing and social (pictures, coffee, desserts). 10:30 am-11:30 am Funeral Ceremony. 12:00 pm-1:00 pm Burial Ceremony at Greenwood Memorial Terrace. Spokane, WA.

Lucy was a cherished neighbor in our Bayview, Idaho community, and we will truly miss her presence. Our thoughts and prayers are with Jim, her daughters Jackie and Vickie, and the rest of her family during this challenging time.

Warm regards,

Vince and Michelle Smith
