Marcella (Marcy) Smith Obituary Marcella (Marcy) Smith passed away September 18, 2015 in Spokane Valley WA, surrounded by family and loved ones. She was born in Sleepy Eye, Minnesota , on Sept. 23, 1922 , the second of four daughters of Charles E. and Lydia (Melzian) Keller, and grew up there. After graduating from high school, she attended the University of Minnesota School of Nursing, graduating with a BS/RN in 1945. While working during a polio epidemic in the pediatrics ward in Minneapolis, she met a young doctor, Nathan J. Smith, and they married on Feb. 9, 1946. For the next 65 years, they shared their lives and many adventures together, travelling all over the world and frequently moving their home base. They also enjoyed many excursions in the outdoors: fishing, camping, backpacking and canoeing. Their overseas travels took them to Paris for a year, Japan, Egypt, South and Central America, Nepal, Southeast Asia, New Zealand, and many places throughout Europe. Among Marcy's greatest gifts were her constant kindness, compassion, and love for life. She left her career to raise three children (Nanette, Douglas, and Bradley). Her family, her home, and the medical community were what she loved. She supported her husbands career and welcomed into the Smith home countless university students, clinicians, and their families from around the world. After her children were grown, she returned to nursing as a pediatric nurse practitioner, one of the first such practitioners in Washington State. She is survived by children and spouses Nan Smith and Art Zack of Spokane Valley, Doug Smith and Ellen Wolf of Talkeetna, AK, and Brad Smith and Dale Fournier of La Conner, WA; and grandchildren Rachel Zack of Spokane, Ben Zack, wife Anna and great grandson Nathan William Zack of Ogden UT, and Dara Zack of Denver, CO. She is also survived by her youngest and very close sister, Janet Snow, and the Snow family. Marcys beloved husband Nathan Smith died in 2011. A private memorial for Marcy was held with family. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations be sent to either the Hospice of Spokane or the University of Minnesota School of Nursing, c/o the University of Minnesota Foundation, 200 Oak St SE, Suite 500, Minneapolis, MN 55455. To plant a beautiful memorial tree in memory of Marcella, please visit our Tree Store.
