July 09, 1922 - June 01, 2014

Margaret Lorraine Berto Obituary (Age 91) Margaret Lorraine Berto, or Rainey as most called her, was born to Albert and Mary Parmenter in Casper, Wyoming on July 9, 1922. She spoke fondly of her days in Wyoming and her move to Spokane with her family when she was 17. She completed her senior year at Rogers High School and later met and married the love of her life, Virgil Berto. Lorraine is preceded in death by her husband Virgil, her oldest son David Michael, and her two sisters, Toots Becker and Agatha Carroll. Surviving children are daughter Estelle West and husband Paul of Nine Mile Falls, WA, son Stephen Berto of Spokane, WA and daughter-in-law Nancy Berto of Chattaroy, WA. Seven grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren will be missing her sense of humor, homemade bread and big hugs. Rainey and Virg were married at St. Francis Xavier church in Spokane on October 25, 1941 and stayed very active with the church and school. She and Virg owned a wallpapering and decorating business, working side by side for many years. She had a gift for writing and wrote many letters to the editors, though at times her kids wished she had used a pen name rather than her own. She loved to cook and owned every cooking gadget and cookbook in existence. Her sense of humor and passion for life enveloped all who were near her. Her laughter and wit always brightened a room. Her family expresses its deep appreciation to all the caregivers who so lovingly cared for her over the past two years and Hospice House of Spokane. A Memorial Mass will be held at 10:30 AM on June 11, 2014 at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, 3715 N. Standard St, Spokane, WA. Donations can be sent on her behalf to the Poor Clare Sisters, 4419 N. Hawthorne, Spokane, WA 99205-1399. To plant a beautiful memorial tree in memory of Margaret, please visit our Tree Store.
