Marian E. McMullen Obituary (Age 79) A wonderful woman, wife, and mother left our lives unexpectedly on April 26, 2014. Marian was born on October 10, 1934, the second child of George and Ruth Maisel, in Baltimore, Maryland. After graduating from Catonsville High School, in Catonsville, MD, she entered nursing school in Baltimore graduating from Union Memorial Hospital as a Registered Nurse in 1955. She began her nursing career working at John Hopkins and Veteran's Administration Hospitals in Maryland. In 1957, Marian entered the USAF Nurse Corps, volunteering for overseas duty in England, where she was assigned at RAF Station Sculthorpe in Norfolk County. There, she met her future husband, Lt Gerald McMullen, a career aviator. They married in April of 1959 and shared 55 memorable years together. After separating from the USAF in September 1959, Marian worked at numerous hospitals throughout the country, while following Gerald's career, including Mountain View, the VA, Sacred Heart, and Deaconess Hospitals in Spokane. During this time, she raised their three children and continued her education, attending colleges in the states they were stationed, earning a BS degree in Health Science from Whitworth College in 1983. Marian was a true professional during her career as a RN. She held the respect and admiration of her peers and supervisors. She traveled, at times, to assignments as a Traveling Nurse and worked in all phases of nursing, providing the utmost care and compassion to her patients, one of her many strengths. She was ANCC certified in Psychiatry/Mental Health, a facet of nursing she enjoyed the most. She retired after 42 years of service. Marian had many interests and talents. She enjoyed reading, gardening, volunteering, sewing, watching professional baseball, bowling, and traveling. She took two trips to Ireland, including one with the Limerick Society, of which she was a member. She supported The Arts, enjoying the symphony and particularly, The Three Tenors. She could listen to them for hours. She also was a fan of English programming, with one of her favorites being Doc Martin. Marian's generosity and thoughtfulness knew no limits, especially when it came to her family and friends. She was a regular presence in the lives of her children and grandchildren, of which they are eternally grateful. She had a tender heart for animals, with more than a few finding their way to her home throughout the years. She was a role model for many, standing up for what she believed to be fair. Her fiery spirit, along with her heart of gold, will be forever missed. Marian was preceded in death by her parents, brothers Paul and George, sisters Carol and Nancy, and niece Celeste Maisel.
