September 12, 1937 - April 15, 2015
Marjorie J. Stone Obituary (Age 77) Marjorie J. Stone died peacefully at home in Spokane, WA on April 15, 2015 with her family by her side. Marje was born on September 12, 1937, the oldest child of Jeanette and Wallace Gill. After graduating from Richland High School she spent one year as a secretary for the US Army at Hanford. The following year she attended Washington State University and graduated with honors and a degree in Pharmacy. Marje married Les Stone on July 19, 1960 in Richland, WA. They started their married life in Vancouver, WA where Marje was a pharmacist at a local drug store. In 1963 she and Les moved to Spokane where Marje and Les had two boys, Frank and David, and began raising their family there. Marje, who was always interested in theology, was an active member of the Spokane Valley United Methodist Church and a Sunday school teacher for a number of years. She was a member of the League of Women Voters and drove for Meals on Wheels. In 1972 Less work took Marje and the family to Ravenswood, West Virginia where they lived for three years before returning to Spokane. After her sons graduated and left home, Marje and Les moved to Butler, Pennsylvania where she audited courses at the University of Pittsburg and was active in the Unity Church of Pittsburg. While in Butler, Marje and Les visited many of the interesting and historical sites in the Eastern US and enjoyed the Pittsburg symphony. Spokane always felt like home and in 1997 Marje and Les returned to a peaceful rural home just outside Spokane Valley. In her retirement Marje enjoyed reading, feasting on her garden, road tripping with Les, staying in touch with lifelong friends and spending time with her 5 grandchildren. Marje was a lifelong learner. She was driven by a compulsion to understand and appreciate the world. She immensely enjoyed getting to know the people around her, traveling the country with her family and always having her nose in a book. She was a voracious reader. She had walls covered in her room that qualified as well rounded libraries, ranging from quantum mechanics, spirituality, and good ol' love stories. There was never enough time to read everything on the list, but she loved the chase. She was always ready for a thoughtful, challenging conversation on life, politics, spirituality and family. Marje was a steadfast moral compass for her family of living life in honesty, compassion and commitment to your values. As a grandma, Marje was a calm, loving and reliable presence to her grandchildren. She could be counted on for games, puzzles, rousing card games and quiet moments of just having her by your side. Marje enjoyed her career as a Pharmacist, but her focus and priority were the men in her life, her two sons and husband. She accomplished in her life what we all hope for, children that are living healthy, successful lives with thriving children of their own. A marriage, that for 54 years brought her happiness, love, continued growth and life with her best friend. Marje is survived by her husband Les Stone, her brothers John and Will Gill, her sons David and Frank Stone and their wives Marlisa and Gloria along with her five grandchildren, Michelle, Miranda, Michael, Matthew and Benjamin. A Celebration of Life will be held for Marje on Saturday, May 16, 2015 at 2:00 pm at the Spokane Valley United Methodist Church, 115 N Raymond Rd, Spokane Valley, WA 99206. Memorial contributions can be made to the Ronald McDonald House of Spokane, 1015 W 5th Ave, Spokane, WA 99204. To plant a beautiful memorial tree in memory of Marjorie, please visit our Tree Store.
