Martin David Halpern Obituary (Age 91) Marty passed away on June 22, 2013 after a long and incredible life. He grew up in Brooklyn, New York during the Depression with his parents Daniel and Tillie Halpern and younger sister Betty. As a child he loved all sports and was a member of the Knot Hole Gang, idolizing his Brooklyn Dodgers and the Babe Ruth. At 18 he enlisted in the Army-AirCorps and served 4 years in Europe during World War II. He loved to play baseball, and talked often about representing his Air Force Base on their baseball team. Returning from the war he met the love of his life Pearl at a Catskill Resort in upstate New York. He became a systems analyst for the Department of Defense after studying computer programming in its infancy. After the birth of their two sons Lloyd and Barry they relocated to Columbus, Ohio in 1965 where he continued to work for the Department of Defense as a systems analyst. They loved the Buckeye state and raised their children there in a loving and supportive home. After retiring from work at the age of 65 they became snowbirds and lived in Florida, his favorite place in the world, during the winter months. Because both their sons (and likely more so their grandchildren) were living in Spokane, they sold the old family home after 33 years and moved to Spokane. They loved the summers here and built a home in Liberty Lake where they have lived until now. He passed away at Sullivan Park Care center where his family was grateful for the outstanding, loving care he received while there. Marty loved sports, and we would watch and talk about sports whenever and wherever we could. He also loved to talk to people, and would strike up conversations with waitresses, salespeople and new acquaintances almost anywhere. He was passionate about politics and extremely proud of his years of service in the military. He was most passionate though about his love for his wife Pearl, who he cherished until his last breath. He is survived by his wife Pearl, his sister Betty, Lloyds family Carmen, Crystal, Justin, Kelsi, Mike, Rachel and Lindsey, Barrys family Sue, Max, Sam and Anna and two great-granchildren Jaxon and Judah, who he was so proud of. We will all miss him dearly. The Funeral Service will be held on Monday, June 24th at 1:00pm at the Heritage Funeral Home and graveside services will follow at Mt. Nebo Cemetery. To plant a beautiful memorial tree in memory of Martin, please visit our Tree Store. Read more Events JUN 22
