Mary Ann (Greenwood) Thiemann

August 31, 1920 - July 26, 2013

Mary Ann (Greenwood) Thiemann Obituary Although we didnt want to let you go, we knew you had grown tired. It was so hard to let you go, but we knew the dear Lord had other plans. We all were with you and mourn your loss, but were comforted knowing youre now in Heaven where the Good Shepherd is now watching over you. Mary Ann passed away Thursday morning in Spokane after suffering a heart attack earlier in the week. She was born in Spokane and attended North Central High School. As a child she and her family spent many days at their Newman Lake cabin. Her favorite Newman Lake story was the many times she and her siblings would swim across the entire lake with her dad in the row boat next to them in case they got tired. In her sophomore year she met her first husband, Wendell (Bud) Greenwood and they eloped in 1939 while Mary Ann was in her senior year. She traveled the world with her husbands government position and eventually was employed as an encryption analyst with the CIA. Upon Buds retirement in 1970 they retired in Spokane. After Buds passing in 1980, her attention turned to her family. On a blind date arranged by their children, she met Ken Thiemann and after a yearlong courtship they were married on November 14, 1982. Ken & Mary Ann spent many years traveling spending their winters in Hawaii, Florida and Texas and enjoyed special vacations in Europe and cruises. They were especially adventurous when they agreed to fly with family in a four seat private plane to Alaska where they enjoyed fishing and scenic drives. In retirement Mary Ann was an avid Bridge player and delighted in getting together with her lady friends for their monthly bridge club meetings. She and Ken were also active in the Sojourners and thoroughly enjoyed their dinners out. Mary Ann was preceded in death by her brother William (Bill) Effertz and sister Jessie Thwaites. Mary Ann is survived by her caring husband Ken Thiemann, sister Johanna Effertz, daughter Bonnie Grant (Michael) and step son Ken Thiemann (Kathleen) and step daughter Coralyn Plein (Pete), grandchildren Colleen Newman (Stephen), Gwen Garren (Steven), Rebecca Grant (Brian), Jeremy Grant (Amanda), Traci Martin (Matt), Ken Thiemann (Nicole) and Christina Thiemann. And the love of her life, nine great grandchildren, Alexandra Newman, Taylor Garren, Clara Martin, Nicolena Thiemann, Andrew Grant, Elly Martin, Jack Thiemann, Mia Martin and Natalie Grant. A special thank you to Lisa their home caregiver, Providence Holy Family Hospital and Spokane Hospice for their loving care. In lieu of flowers, remembrances can be made to the Union Gospel Mission, 1224 E. Trent, Spokane, Washington 99201. A funeral service will be held at Heritage Funeral Home on Wednesday, July 31, 2013 at 10 am followed by graveside services.
