(Mummy to her children, Kunju to her family and Ammachy to her grand-children) , was born to Thankamma and Ninan Joseph of Pavithikunnel House, Mallappally, Kerala, India, on December 3rd, 1928. She went home to be with our Lord on August 17th, 2009 following her husband of 53 years,
George Verghese, by only one month. Mary's family was descended from the Pakalomattom family, which was one of the first Indian families to be converted to Christianity in AD 52. She has lived in Spokane since 1983. Mary attended St.
Theresa's College in Ernakulam, India and graduated with her B.A. in History and Economics from University of Madras (Chennai) in 1951. She obtained her Master's degree in Social Work from the Madras School of Social Work in 1955. She was among the first batch of graduates to obtain a Master's degree from that institution and her thesis," Women in the Plantation Industry", was acclaimed as one of the best ever written at the school. While in Spokane, she was a social worker for Elder Services, S.L. Start and Associates and the Park Tower Apartments. Mary leaves behind her three children: Gita Hatcher and her husband, Fr. Michael (Spokane, WA); Ajit George and his wife, Shyama (Vancouver, WA); Kavita Terrells and her husband, James (Spokane, WA); her grandchildren, Sulochana Abeid (Spokane), Rajiv Hatcher (Portland, OR), Pradeep Hatcher (Seattle, WA), Sharath Verghese and Tarik Chakko (Vancouver, WA), Amirah, Maia and Jahan Terrells (Spokane); her children-in-law, Mellad Abeid and Emily Crawford; and her great-grandchildren, Simon Abeid and Elishuba Hatcher. She also leaves behind her sister, Grace Perera of Sri Lanka, and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. Her strong faith, sweet spirit, loving nature and infectious laugh will be very much missed. May God grant you eternal rest and peace. Prayer vigil to be held on Thursday, August 20th, at 7 pm at St. Gregorios Orthodox Church, 2803 N. Lincoln, Spokane, WA 99205. The visitation will be held at Heritage Funeral Home Friday, August 21st, at 9:30am and the funeral will follow at 10:00 am. The family thanks all our friends and relatives for their love, prayers and support. Memorials may be sent to St. Gregorios Orthodox Church. Flowers may be sent to Heritage Funeral Home.
