Mary York Obituary
Mary was born in Esmond, North Dakota on April 29, 1914, to Simon and Gina (Karlsbraaten) Barsness, and died March 25, 2009 in Spokane, Washington. She graduated from Concordia College in Moorhead, Minnesota in 1935 and subsequently taught at three schools in Minnesota then taught at North Central High School in Spokane for twenty years. She has been a member of Salem Lutheran Church for more than 50 years and was an active parishioner. She was an avid card player and was actively involved in bridge groups. She was preceded in death by her husband Earl Jerome York (Jerry) in 1979. She is survived by her daughters Stephanie Allen (Ethan) and Mary Lynn Swannack (George); granddaughters Christina Martin (Allen),Kelley Hilderman (Ross), Karen West (Jason), and grandson Brian Allen (Mary). Mary is also survived by her sister Sibyl Garske and nephew Scott Garske (Becky) and their childrenGriffin Garske and Jayme Wichman (Brandon). Mary had nine great-grandchildren: Katherine and Elizabeth Allen, Abby and Ethan Bartolick, Kate and Grace Hilderman, Paige, Ava, and Piper West. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Salem Lutheran Church in Mary's name. Private inurnment occurred April 7th at Fairmount Memorial Park. Services at Salem Lutheran, 1428 W. Broadway Ave. are scheduled on Thursday, April 16th at 10:30AM. The family would like to thank Avalon Care Center and their staff for the exceptional care they provided for Mary the last year.
