Marybelle Helen "Mary" Havens Obituary
(Age 89) Mary entered into Heavenly rest on February 16, 2017 in Spokane, WA. Mary was born on July 8, 1927 in Spokane, WA. She spent her childhood in St. Maries, ID before moving to Fairfield, WA with her family. While growing up in Fairfield, Mary and her family attended and were members of the Fairfield Presbyterian Church. Mary was also a member of the Order of Eastern Star. She graduated from Fairfield H.S. in 1946 and has remained lifelong friends with her High School pal, Jean Eyre. In 1947, Mary moved to Pullman, WA where she attended classes at WSU and worked for the WSU Agriculture Extension Service Department. While living in Pullman, Mary made another lifelong friend in Pat Sprouse. Mary met and married Ralph Havens in 1952. Ralph and Mary had 2 children, a son, David born in 1955 and a daughter, Joan born in 1957. In the mid 1960s Ralph, Mary, David and Joan moved to a farm in Moscow, ID. Mary became quite a gardener and landscaper around their property. Mary was also very resourceful while on the farm raising chickens and selling their eggs for a season. She became involved in 4-H with David and Joan, helping them with numerous projects over the years.
In 1970, Mary, David and Joan moved to Spokane, WA where David and Joan got settled into school and Mary went to work for Acme Print Shop. After a short time at Acme Print Shop, she left there and went to work for the Washington Water Power in the Engineering Department working on and making Blueprints. Later, she transferred to the Graphic Arts Department within the Washington Water Power until her Retirement in 1991. In 1978, Mary moved into her home in Mead, WA. Mary was a very creative and artistic person. She loved sketching, leather tooling, and other types of art projects. Over the years she had a travel trailer at Jump Off Joe Lake Resort. She enjoyed spending time at the lake and traveling with another Lifelong friend, Polly Pickles. Mary would keep her trailer at the Lake from April to October enjoying fishing, row boating, sitting around a fire having coffee with family and friends as well as spending time with her beloved dog, Peppie. Mary moved from her home in Mead, WA to Riverview Terrace Retirement Community of Spokane in August of 2013 where she was lovingly known as "The Candy Lady" giving candy away to everyone that passed by. Mary remained at Riverview until her death. A very special "THANK YOU" to the staff at Riverview for your loving care of Mary during her time with you!
Mary is survived by her sister, Patricia Owens, Spokane, WA; son, David Havens, Richland, WA, daughter, Joan Schwisow (Gary), Spokane, WA; five grandchildren, Ann Bennett, Dufur, OR, Nicole Stevens (Brian), Richland, WA, Taylor Schwisow (Tarah), Spokane, WA, Krystin Roberts, Kennewick, WA, and Mitchell Wood (Anthony), Spokane, WA; four (+2) great-grandchildren; cousins, Roland Stahl (Janet), Onancock, VA, Jean (Charles) Dormann, Walnut Creek, CA; and numerous nieces and nephews. Marybelle is preceded in death by her parents, Roy and Mary Thurston and her brother, Robert Thurston. A Life Celebration will be held at 1:00 pm on Sunday, May 28, 2017 at the Onion Bar and Grill, 7522 N Division, Spokane, WA 99208. In lieu of flowers, Mary requested that donations be made to Riverview Care Center, 1841 E Upriver Dr., Spokane, WA 99207 or Hospice of Spokane, PO Box 2215 Spokane, WA.
