Miyo Akiyama Obituary (Age 100) Went home to her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on January 2, 2017 at Hospice House South. She was born on September 14, 1916 in Seattle, WA to Yojuro and Haru Yamaura, the second of six children. Miyo graduated from Garfield High School, attended Seattle University, and graduated from Columbus Hospital (St. Francis Cabrini) School of Nursing in 1940. In February 1942 during WWll, Miyo moved to Rochester, MN where she worked at Mayo Clinic as head nurse in the Neuro-surgical Department. Her family moved to Spokane in 1942. After working two years at Mayo, she relocated to Spokane to help care for her ailing mother. In Spokane she worked at Deaconess Hospital as head nurse on the surgical floor. On November 22, 1945 she married her soul mate, Masuo, and they celebrated 69 years of marriage before his passing in 2014. They welcomed two children, Paul and Laura, into their lives. Miyo enjoyed fellowship and craft projects in her 30 years of membership in City Homemakers group. Miyo, with Masuo as her assistant, created many crafts which they donated to church youth group fund raisers, and also gifted to friends and family. She was involved with Cub Scouts, Girl Scouts, Fujihana Kai Japanese Dance Group, loved sewing, knitting, crocheting, canning/freezing Masuo's harvests from his bounteous vegetable garden, Bible study, and reading. She also served in various capacities at church over many decades and shared how inspirational it was to attend the denominational spiritual life and evangelism conferences. Miyo is survived by Paul (Linda) Akiyama of University Place, WA, Laura (Steve) Yoshihara of Spokane; grandsons Ryan and Corey Akiyama, Casey, Mike, Josh, and Tim Yoshihara; nine great-grandchildren, and sister Margaret Ueda. A memorial service will be held at Highland Park United Methodist Church, 611 S. Garfield, on March 4th at 12:30 PM. Memorial donations may be made to the church, mailing address - 919 E.
