Myrl was born in Helena, Montana on March 14, 1941 to Myrle Chapman and Bernice (Smigaj) Chapman. He spent his early years in the small mining town of Marysville, Montana. He traveled with his mom while his dad was in pilot training for the Army Air Corps. His family moved to Spokane in 1947 following his dad's discharge from the military. Myrl attended Browne and Field Elementary schools along with Havermale Junior High. He graduated from North Central High School in 1959 and EWU with a Bachelors degree in 1984. In his younger years, Myrl owned an MGB sports car that he loved to drive with the top down. He enjoyed scuba diving, and later on, he enjoyed boating with his family, snow and water skiing, golfing and traveling with his wife, Michal. Myrl met Michal Ann Madsen of Bountiful, Utah at church in 1963, and they were married on August 6, 1966. They had four children, Wendy, Becky, Shane and Brett. Myrl is preceded in death by his son, Brett (2014), his father, Myrle Sr. (1988), his mother, Bernice (2012) and his brother, Clark (2015). In 1960, Myrl joined the Navy Reserve based at the Sand Point Naval Air Station in Seattle, Washington. He served on active duty during the Vietnam War, aboard the USS Bon Homme Richard from 1964-1965. He earned an honorable discharge and Vietnam Service Medal. His love for his country came second only to his love for his family. He worked very hard to provide for his family. He owned and managed various apartments from 1970 to 2012. His career also included working as a Sales Representative for Campbell Soup Company. He formed Chapco Construction in 1974, specializing in homes and apartments in the Spokane area. He joined Garco Construction in 1980 as Construction Supervisor and later served as Safety Manager. Myrl retired from Garco Construction in 2011. Myrl loved spending time with his family. He had a very large dining table custom-built to seat the entire family. Together with his family, he enjoyed many good times around that table. Spending time together didn't stop at the house. It included many games, Christmas parties, Easter egg hunts, Labor Day breakfasts and other spontaneous activities that Myrl would plan. He was a great teacher. He taught his children the value of hard work and a positive attitude, he would say, "If you get bad lemons, make lemonade." He was an eternal optimist! Myrl would always give everyone the benefit of the doubt. He was so kindhearted and giving. During the time that he owned apartments, if he had a renter that was unable to pay their rent, he would buy them groceries instead of charging late fees. He loved doing anonymous acts of service for people. That only made the service more enjoyable to him. He served those around him out of love. Myrl also enjoyed volunteering at the Valley Hospital with his wife. They served together as volunteers from 2011 to 2014. Everyone loved spending time with Myrl. He made everyone feel loved. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends. As Myrl would say "Life is good." To plant a beautiful memorial tree in memory of Myrl, please visit our Tree Store. Read more Events AUG 3
