August 01, 1922 - December 21, 2012

Omar Thomas "Tom" McCarty Obituary Tom was preceded in death by his wife Rowena in 1977, his second wife Pennie in 2007, and his five siblings. He is survived by his six children: Colleen, Michael, Anita, Mary, Kevin and Sean. He has ten grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Tom was born in Sultan, WA to William and Susan McCarty. He is the fourth of six children. He served in World War II in the U.S. Army and fought in the Battle at the Remagen Bridge in Germany. He moved to the Spokane area where he attended Eastern Washington State College and graduated in 1952. He taught elementary school for 30 years in District 81; at Pratt, Franklin and the majority of those years at Whitman Elementary. In addition to coaching after school sports, Tom also taught in the All City Square Dancing Program for the school district and was the Coach for the All City Girls Tumbling Program. Tom loved the outdoors! From Steelhead fishing to hunting, camping, hiking and cross country skiing. He was an avid ball room and square dancer. In retirement, he was active in the "Jacks & Jennys" Square Dance Club and made several trips to Alaska with the club. His children are inspired and proud of his volunteer work with the elderly shut-in people in some of the downtown hotels. His sweet spirit, big smile and "Oh Yeah" signature comment will be forever missed! Services are Friday, the 28th at 2:00pm at the Heritage Funeral Home, 508 N. Government Way. The family suggests in lieu of flowers that donations be made to the Inland Empire Honor Flight Program.
