Paul B. Dougherty Obituary (Age 90) Paul passed away on January 27, 2016 in Spokane, WA. He was born in Mount Vernon, WA to Paul E. and Abbie May Dougherty. He grew up in Tacoma, WA and graduated from Lincoln High School. He joined the Navy during WWII, going through boot camp at Farragut, ID, then basic engineering, diesel and LST schools in Mississippi and Virginia. As a petty officer he was assigned to USS LST 229 at Boston and sailed through Panama Canal to join the US Navy Amphibious Forces in the Pacific Theater. After the war they had to give the LST to the Japanese and he was then assigned to LST 596 at Shanghai to transport Chinese Nationalists north to fight the Chinese Communists. Paul came to Spokane in 1946 to attend Spokane Trade School, later called Spokane Community College. He worked as a teamster for Consolidated Freightways, then spent 40 years as a heavy duty truck mechanic for International Harvester, where he was elected union shop steward and safetyman for the last 15 of those years. Paul was a member of Machinist Lodge 86, Life Member VFW Post 1474, Eagles Lodge #2, NRA, Navy Memorial Foundation and former member of Moose Lodge #161. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, traveling to National Parks in USA and Canada, traveling remote Forest Service roads, gardening, dancing, and photography. Paul was able to go on the Honor Flight to Washington D.C. and was in the military parade in Spokane. He enjoyed Providence Adult Day Health, made many new friends, enjoyed dice bingo and music. Paul always said he just wanted to make it to his 90th birthday and he did with all of his class friends and neighbors. The VFW played his favorite songs. Special thanks to Horizon Hospice, the Spokane VA Medical Center and to the family and friends that were by his side in those last moments. In the last weeks of his life he found peace and gave his life to our Lord Jesus Christ. Former wives were Carolyn Beckham (deceased), Betty McTaggart (Fraser) and LaVonne Crisp. Sisters are Ruth McMains (Bob, deceased), Syracuse, NY, Lois Cook (Howard, deceased) Brentwood, CA, Mildred Griffin, Sacramento, CA, and the late Harriet Johnson, Seattle, WA. Children are Linda Heidecker (Rob cameron), Spokane, WA, Rick Dougherty (deceased) (Lesley), Deer Park, WA, Marcia Maples (Jim, deceased), Hatch, UT, Carol Richards (Larry), Las Vegas, NV, Linda Tilley (Joe, deceased), Jacksonville, FL, Michael Dougherty, Spokane, WA and Patti Zimmerman Starr, Spokane, WA, 20 grandchildren, 35 great-grandchildren, two deceased great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild and like family, the Mike and Cindy Owens family, Jeff and family, Mike and family and Eric and family. A Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, February 6, 2016 at 12 noon at Sunset Chapel inside Fairmount Memorial Park, 5200 W Wellesley, Spokane, WA. Graveside Service will immediately follow. Reception to follow will be held at the VFW Post #1474, 2902 E Diamond in Hillyard.
