Phillip Weiner Obituary (Age 94) The Spokane Jewish community is deeply saddened by the passing of Phillip Weiner on Saturday, November 6, 2010. Phil was born on November 2, 1916, in Spokane, to Samuel and Ettie Weiner, recent immigrants from Eastern Europe. He attended Irving Grade School and Lewis & Clark High School. The Weiner Grocery Store once located on 3rd Avenue between Walnut and Maple Streets was operated as a family business for over 50 years. Phil was a WWII Army veteran, landing with the second wave at Normandy Beach and then fighting in the Battle of the Bulge. He returned home with five battle stars. Soon after, he joined his older brother, Lou, as co-managers of the Weiner's Grocery. A short time later, Phil married, Eleanor Abrams, his sweetheart of several years. They were married two days short of 65 years. Phil was known for his tireless work ethic, dedication to his community, and high standards of excellence. He will be greatly missed. He was preceded in death by his brother, Louis Weiner; sisters, Jennie Eckhaus and Anne Berelson; and nephew, Jack Eckhaus. His wife, Eleanor, at home survives Phil. Surviving nephews and nieces are: Melvin (Lynnette) Weiner, Bellevue, WA; Richard (Janet) Aach, St. Louis, MO; Marilyn Levy, St. Louis, MO; Barbara (George) Andreini, Portola Valley, CA; Marvin (Ilene) Holtzberg, San Francisco, CA; Bernard (Janie) Stertzer, La Mesa, CA; Marvin Berelson, Liberty Lake, WA; Betty Lou (Daniel) Silberberg, Northbrook, IL; and Charles Engler. Services will be held at Heritage Funeral Chapel Tuesday, November 9th, at noon. Rabbi Michael Goldstein will officiate. A graveside service will follow at Mt. Nebo. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to your favorite charity. May the memory of Phil Weiner always be recalled for a blessing.
