November 18, 1956 - April 17, 2023

Randy Obituary Randy Maurer died unexpectedly at one of his favorite spots - the family cabin on Lake Coeur d'Alene. Randy loved all things WSU (except for the anthracite uniforms), '70s music (especially the Doobie Brothers and Chicago), a good party, negotiating a good deal and most of all, his family and friends. Randy was born in Richland to Kenley and Helen Maurer, and grew up in Pasco. He stayed close to his Pasco roots and never missed a Tri-Cities hydroplane race. Randy graduated from WSU where he was president of Delta Sigma Phi fraternity. In 1978 he attended a sorority pajama dance with a blind date. The date didn't work out, but at the dance he met his future wife, Kathy. They were married for nearly 39 years. Randy moved to Spokane in 1979. He first worked for NCR and then had a long career in the telecommunications industry, primarily at US West/Qwest and Frontier Communications. He was the unofficial social director for a wide group of friends, organizing tailgate parties, New Year's Eve get-togethers and golf tournaments. He was known for his sense of humor, and family members looked forward to receiving a hilarious and often irreverent "R. Maurer original" greeting card. Despite many valiant attempts, he never won the New Yorker cartoon contest. He was also a compassionate caregiver. Randy is survived by his wife, Kathy; brother Mitchell and wife Sherry; niece Jennifer Maurer Sanders and husband Steven; niece Allison Maurer; nephews Brian and Kyle DePartee; and cousin Jana Aufai. He will also be greatly missed by in-laws Marilyn Knight; Bill Knight and Dorothy Graham; Tracey and Dave DePartee; and Lisa Knight. Memorials can be made to Joya Child & Family Development (joya.org) or the Elson S. Floyd College of Medicine (medicine.wsu.edu).
