Rev. Richard C. Zagel

Rev. Richard C. Zagel Obituary Rev. Richard C. Zagel, age 89, passed away at home on December 7, 2011 in Valleyford, WA. He was born to Rev. Martin Zagel and Eleanore Zagel on March 24, 1922 in Paul, ID. Richard spent his youth growing up between Twin Falls, ID and boarding school in Portland, OR. After graduation and further education, he entered the Lutheran Seminary Missouri Synod in Springfield, IL. Following his ordination, he married Eleanor Schueler in June of 1947. His ministerial career first took them to Alberta, Canada and then to subsequent parishes in Milton-Freewater, OR, Sutherlin, OR, and Wapato, WA. Moving to Spokane in 1969, he took the position of hospital chaplain for the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod N.W. District, serving for over twenty years. After retirement, he spent time in Alaska as an interim pastor. He was a member of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church and Pilgrim Lutheran Church. He enjoyed fishing for the �big one,� as well as pheasant and duck hunting. Golf was also an enjoyable pastime. He is survived by his daughters DiDi (Steve) Funk, Anacortes, WA, Eileen (Lauren) Larson, Valleyford, WA; granddaughters Erica Funk, Seattle, WA, Kiira (Gary) Larson-Hamil, Spokane Valley, WA; twin brother Robert (Betty) Zagel, Spokane, WA; sister Soosie Keller, Gresham, OR; sister-in-law Norma (Frank) Hendrickson, Cedar Rapids, IA, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife Eleanor in 2007 and his brother, Rev. Pete Zagel. A memorial service will be held at 11 am on Saturday, February 11, 2012 at Pilgrim Lutheran Church, 2733 Northwest Blvd, Spokane, WA. Memorial contributions may be made in Richard's name to Professional Church Workers Fund, N.W. District Lutheran Church Missouri Synod or to Hospice of Spokane.
