Richard "Dick" Austin Diehl Obituary
Passed away in Spokane, WA. on June 3, 2009. He was born to Gus and Zelda Diehl on October 18, 1923 in Westwood, California. He and his younger brother Bob were raised by their Grandad, Joe Lockhart in Dierks, Arkansas. At the young age of 15, Richard joined the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC). In 1941 he joined the military and served as a medic, Private First Class, Company A375, Medical Battalion, Ground Operations. He met and married the love of his life Barbara Jean Greear in Spokane on April 7, 1942. They had been married 56 years before Jean passed away. Her passing left a void in Richard's life until the day he left this world to be with her again. Before he retired at the age of 62, Richard worked for Kaiser Aluminum, Mead Plant for 30 years. He leaves behind daughter Victoria Ouaale, and son Daniel, along with numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. Throughout his life he set a wonderful example for his family with his quiet, good-hearted manner and his forgiving nature. Although afflicted with the after effects of a stroke 10 years ago, Richard remained self-sufficient and independent. His verbal communication may have been hampered but there was no mistaking the meaning behind his smile when just watching the grandchildren at family gatherings. His physical presence will be greatly missed but his memory will remain with all those who loved and knew him. Viewing and Visitation will be held on Thursday, June 4th from 9:00am-5:00pm and Friday, June 5th from 8:00am-1:00pm at HERITAGE FUNERAL HOME. A Funeral Service will be held on Friday, June 5, 2009 at 2:30pm at Heritage Funeral Chapel.
