In 1988 Bob was elected as a Fellow of the Society, in 1989 he was named Forester of the Year, and in 2000 he was the recipient of the Golden Membership Award for half a century of SAF membership and practice of forestry. He was recognized for his exceptional volunteer service with the Silver Beaver Award. Bob supported education with his volunteer work for the Job Corps in the 1970s and the Spokane Public Schools as a chair for the Agricultural Advisory Committee in the 1990s. In the mid-80s Bob and Billie joined the Hobnailer Hiking Club, participating for over a decade and served as club president several times. They also traveled widely during this time to China, Costa Rica, Europe and many U.S. locations.
