Robert D. "Bob" Welch Obituary Born December 4, 1928 to Jim and Agnes Welch in Dayton, WA. His mother died June 12, 1936. Bob was just 7 ? years old. Their house burned to the ground October 14, 1936, the same year. Dad hired housekeepers for several years, which did not work out very well. Bob attended Star School through the 7th grade. Then lived with an aunt and uncle in Dayton for the 8th grade. Spring of 8th grade, Bob lived and worked with an elderly lady, milking 3 cows a night at night and morning, plus yard work. During harvest of that year, he was to know and was taken in by Frank Schafer and his family. He did chores and drove tractor. During the spring of 1947, Frank lost the lease on his farm land due to the sale to Laibs. Frank then leased land belonging to Judge Bean of Walla Walla. This west 66 Ralston. He then went to live with Leo Schafer out on the Whetstone near Dayton, finishing his senior year. After graduating in 1947, he had several small jobs. Bob then went to work for Vernon Schafer at Washtucna. It was there he met the manager of Lind Grain Supply. Bob was hired for a job there until November 20, 1950. He was then drafted in to the Army. Bob was sent to Austria near Salsburg for 15 months and discharged November 15, 1952 as a Sgt. E5. He then returned to Lind for another year. He was hired as the manager of Reardan Grange November 1, 1953. He met and married Ruth Fode November 29, 1953. Bob was preceded in death by 3 brothers and 1 sister. He is survived by his wife Ruth and one daughter, 5 grandkids and numerous great-grandkids. Bob worked for Grange Supply ? (Cenex) for 28 ? years, as a manager for 2 years. He then worked for Schaffer Mfg. for 28 years, retiring in 2011. A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, August 15, 2018 at 11:00AM at Heritage Funeral Home.
