Robert Joseph Demory

Robert Joseph Demory Obituary ur much-beloved husband, father, brother, and grandfather passed away on December 4th at Sacred Heart Medical Center at the age of 71. Robert Joseph Demory was born in Walla Walla, Washington to Robert and Lenore Demory. He attended St. Patricks Grade school and DeSales High school, graduating in 1970. Bob then attended Bishop White Seminary at Gonzaga University for one year before changing to a sociology major, graduating in 1974. Bob met his wife Gayla at First Presbyterian Church. After proposing to her on the Oregon Coast, they were married at the church within a year. They were lifelong residents of Spokane, where they raised their two children. Bob had a long, successful career in the chemical dependency counseling field where he shaped many lives. He retired after 25 years at the VA Medical Center. Bob deeply loved his family. He was devoted to his marriage with Gayla, and they shared a strong faith in God. He was very proud of his children's character, professional achievements, and commitment to their own families. Bob was passionate about athletics. His athletic career started in high school where he excelled at football and track and field. He was proud to be a part of the mile relay team that won the state championship in his senior year of high school. He continued his enthusiasm for exercise through hiking, backpacking, and walking 4-5 miles daily up until his passing. His dependability, consistency, and generous spirit were unmatched. He donated 24 gallons of blood over several decades. Bob was a loyal friend to many, maintaining strong ties with his high school and college friends. He was an outstanding big brother and role model to his siblings. He was a math wizard who excelled at sports knowledge, enjoyed rock and roll music, and he loved his Zags. The Oregon Coast had a special place in Bob's heart. Bob took numerous trips over the years, starting as a child and eventually being able to take his grandchildren. He had one final trip to the coast with his wife just weeks before his passing. Bob was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Lenore Demory. Survived by his wife Gayla, daughter Alyssa (Mike) Caggiano, son Joel (Chelsey) Demory, grandchildren Hallie, Kira, Adrion, and Hudson, sister Margaret Rosenkranz, brothers Doug (Barb) and Jim Demory, sister-in-law Marilyn Schaneman and he he he his much-cherished nieces and nephews. We would like to thank Dr. Yiping Li and the staff at SHMC neuro ICU, specifically Sherry, Lauren, and Darci, who provided exceptional care in his last days. A celebration of life will be held on December 17th at 1 PM at Heritage Chapel, 508 N. Government Way, Spokane, WA 99224.
