Robert Max Hammann Obituary Obituary for Robert Max Hammann, (Air Force Lt. Col. Retired) Robert Max Hammann passed away on Wednesday, November 21, 2018 at the age of 96. He was born in Erie, Pennsylvania on August 17, 1922 as an only son to Max and Maude Hammann. Robert�s dad, Max, was a disabled veteran of WW I who had suffered exposure to mustard gas during the fighting in France. Sometime after Robert�s birth, Max, Maude and Robert moved to California where they struggled to survive during the Depression. Robert graduated from high school and joined the U.S. Army in 1940 where he achieved the rank of sergeant working as a fighter crew chief. After the bombing of Pearl Harbor and the United States entered World War II, he qualified for officers� training school. After completion of officer training school, he qualified for flight training. He eventually attained the rank of 1st Lieutenant and became a training pilot for the B-17. He trained pilots and ferried plans to the east coast for use in the war in Europe. In early 1944, he met Dorothy Louise Patton of Phoenix, AZ. After a few months of courting, they were married on July 24, 1944. He continued as a pilot in the U.S. Army Air Corp until the end of the war. Upon his honorable discharge from the military after the war, he moved to San Bernardino, CA, where he worked as a carpenter apprentice and at a variety of jobs. During this time span, he and Dorothy had three children, Robert II, Betty and Glenn. When the Korean War started, he re-entered the United States Air Force and began flying again. He flew the B-47, the KC-135 Tanker and the O-2 Cessna during his 34 year career. His family moved all over the United States, while Robert served his country. He served one year in Vietnam flying the O-2 Cessna dropping propaganda leaflets at low level on the Viet Cong. In 1974, he retired honorably from the Air Force after 34 years of service. He settled in Spokane, Washington where he and Dorothy lived in retirement until Dorothy died in May of 1991. On August 17, 1993, Robert was married to Barbara Rice of Scottsdale, AZ. They were married for 25 years traveling including yearly trips to Hawaii. They enjoyed the life of snowbirds spending the summers at his home in Spokane, WA and the winters at her home in Scottsdale, AZ. Robert is preceded in death by his mother and father Maude and Max Hammann and his former wife Dorothy Hammann. He is survived by his wife Barbara Hammann of Scottsdale AZ and her extended family that he also considered his own, his three children: Robert Hammann II (Martha) of Oskaloosa, IA, Betty Hammann Sanders (Brad) of Montgomery AL, Glenn Hammann (Pepper) of Winlock, WA, six grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren and 4 great-great grandchildren. A special thanks goes to Linda Stanley for the care of her mother Barbara Hammann during days leading up to Robert�s death. A special thanks also goes out to the staffs at Deaconess Hospital, the Northern Idaho Advanced Care Hospital and Hospice House of Spokane for their incredible care for Robert. A funeral service will be conducted at Heritage Funeral Home located at 508 N. Government Way, Spokane, WA at 9:00 AM Wednesday, November 28, 2018 followed by a graveside service with military honors at 10:30 AM at Fairmount Cemetery located at 5200 W.
