Sherwood Leroy Orvik

October 8, 1940 – June 2, 2026

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Dear Ole’ Dad, grandfather, brother, and friend, Sherwood Leroy Orvik, on June 2, 2026, at the age of 85.

Sherwood was born on October 8th, 1940, in Halstad, Minnesota. An adventurous young man, he left the family farm and set out for California. Deciding it was not the place for him, he planned to continue on to Alaska but stopped in Spokane, Washington, to visit relatives along the way. Spokane captured his heart, and he chose to stay, building a lifetime of cherished memories, lasting friendships, and a loving family.

Sherwood was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Mary Wilkinson Orvik, with whom he shared nearly 30 years of marriage. A deeply patriotic man, he and Mary chose to marry on the Fourth of July. Mary passed away in 2025 on their wedding anniversary, and Sherwood looked forward to being reunited with her.

He is also preceded by his sister Sharon Bernier (Bruce) and his parents, Blanche and Morris Orvik.

He is survived by his sister, Maureen Larson (Mike); his children, Sherrie Orvik, Steven Orvik (Karen), Jody Crews (Chris), Mary Brandyberry (Stan), and Jason Wilkinson (Tas); 13 grandchildren; soon-to-be 10 great-grandchildren; and many extended family members and dear friends.

For 37 years, Sherwood called Spokane’s historic lower South Hill home. A man of routine, he was a familiar sight walking his two large malamutes through the neighborhood he loved. He possessed a remarkable, nearly photographic memory for maps, directions, and golf courses. Even as vision impairment challenged him in later years, he could still guide others from point A to point B better than Siri or Google Maps.

Sherwood dedicated more than 60 years to preparing taxes, earning the trust and loyalty of countless clients through his professionalism, integrity, and personal touch. He was equally loyal to his community and especially to the game of golf. An active member of the local golf community, he played whenever he had the opportunity and rarely met a golf course he didn’t enjoy. Beyond golf, he loved basketball, softball, and faithfully cheered on the Minnesota Vikings.

Known for his quick wit and easy humor, Sherwood had a gift for keeping life lighthearted. Family and friends will forever remember his familiar sayings, including his favorite: “Round and round we go.”

During the past year, Sherwood faced significant challenges with remarkable courage, gratitude, and grace. Despite the difficulties he encountered, he maintained a positive outlook and continued making friends wherever he went. He quickly became a beloved resident of the assisted living community he came to call home, touching many lives with his kindness, humor, and genuine interest in others.

Sherwood’s legacy lives on through the family he loved, the friendships he nurtured, and the countless lives he impacted through his generosity, loyalty, and unwavering spirit. He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered.

"Round and round we go."
