Shirley June Schneider Obituary
(Age 87) Passed away peacefully on the 5th of May 2016. She was born in Astoria, Oregon on the 28th of June 1928. However at 6 months of age her parents, Carl and Belle Iverson, moved to the family farm in the Willamette Valley near Monmouth, Oregon. Here Shirley grew up enjoying the freedom and joy along with the hard work of farming. During the Second World War the family farm was commandeered as a field training site in Camp Adair... The Iverson family was relocated to Carlton, Oregon on a farm that bordered on the Yamhill river. Shirley was an excellent equestrian. On one of her riding excursions she met another rider, Joan Schneider. Conversation revealed the Schneider family lived on a nearby farm and had a son, George, who attended Oregon State University... The inevitable occurred; they met, fell in love and were married in McMinnville, Oregon on the 12th of March 1949. Shirley dropped out of College at the end of her second year and worked as a receptionist for a group of psychiatrists in order to support her medical student husband. During the time period in medical school, four children were born; Kenneth, Phillip, Janet and Leanne Rae. After graduation, the military gave her husband a choice, enlist or be drafted. Seven years later and one more child, Debra Denise; two tours of duty at Letterman hospital in San Francisco, one in San Antonio, and another at Valley Forge Hospital in Pennsylvania, her husband resigned his commission, received his honorable discharge and they were on their way to Spokane, Washington. Here he joined Alton Stier, M.D. in a private clinical laboratory (then Patton-Stier, now Pathology Associates Medical Laboratory and Incyte) and she established their home in the Spokane Valley on 23rd Ave. The experiences and friendships of the families on this street are almost legend. Suffice to say this was a joyous time as she watched her children mature.
Although raising a family of five kept her busy, she still found time to pursue her love of gardening, horseback riding, camping and world travel. Additionally she was active as a leader in the Girl Scouts; a long time volunteer at the Valley Hospital and Medical Center and in the 1980?s served as a Board member and Secretary of the Washington State Medical Auxiliary.
She is preceded in death by her parents Carl H. Iverson and Belle Fern Iverson and her older brother Roger W. Beckley and his wife, Nadene Beckley.
She is survived by her husband of 67 years, George W. Schneider Jr., her five children; Kenneth M. Schneider, Phillip W. Schneider and wife Karen, Janet L. Murrell and husband Dennis, Leanne Rae Russell and husband Bruce, Debra Denise Landerholm and husband Walt; fifteen grandchildren and thirteen great grandchildren.
Memorial service will be held at Heritage Funeral Home, 508 N. Government Way, Spokane, Washington on the 16th of June at 10:00 A.M.
In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts in her name may be made to SCRAPS
