February 11, 1944 - April 15, 2023

Susan Kay Harris Obituary Our beloved mother, wife, and grandmother, Susan Kay Harris, passed away on April 15, 2023. Sue lived a life filled with love, humor, and strength. She was born on February 11, 1944, to Phil and Fran Morris in Des Moines, Iowa. Her father?s work in the Army Corps of Engineers brought their small family to Walla Walla, Washington where she grew up. Sue?s intelligence was apparent at a young age, and thrived with her parents? support in sending her to Whitman College, where she graduated with a history major. She began her 43-year teaching career in the Spokane Valley at Blake Elementary. It was around this time that a young man named Del Harris entered her life. Sue enjoyed his sense of humor and wit, but declined to date him several times, before finally saying yes. And what a gift this would turn out to be. Sue and Del were married 52 years. They had two children, Jeffery and Kristina, and five grandchildren. In the summers, Sue could be found relaxing at their Lake Pend Oreille property with a stack of books, surrounded by brothers- and sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, and neighbors. She was an active member of her sorority, Beta Sigma Phi. She loved teaching at Blake, Broadway, and finally Chester Elementary, and her students remember her as a strong-willed, supportive protector of her kids. Sue loved to talk and laugh and cheer at her grandkids? games. We will miss those sounds. Even near the end, when her memory started to fail, her spirit could not be dimmed and she knew that she was loved. Sue is survived by her husband, Del, her children Jeff (Hannah) Harris, and Krissy (Jeremy) Taylor; her grandchildren, Kate, Abi, Olivia, Henry, and Miles. She was preceded in death by her parents, Phil and Fran. An open house Celebration of Life is planned for May 5th, 4-6pm, at Heritage Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Vanessa Behan Crisis Nursery or Hospice House of Spokane in Sue?s honor.
