Thomas “Tom” Nathaniel Bookman Sr., a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, veteran, and friend, passed away peacefully on September 9, 2026, surrounded by his loving family. He was 97 years old.

Tom was born on October 3, 1928, in Newberry, South Carolina, to Purvis and Luvenia Bookman. He was one of eight children and grew up alongside his siblings, Pearlie Mae Bookman Mayers, Mary Bookman Dominick, Pervis James Bookman Sr., Joseph Bookman, Bessie Bookman Kinard, Teaner Bookman Billups, and Bernice Bookman.

Tom proudly served his country for 26 years in the United States Air Force, achieving the rank of Master Sergeant before retiring from military service in 1973. His years in the Air Force reflected the discipline, commitment, and strength of character that defined his life.

Following his military retirement, Tom began a second successful career with Pacific Northwest Bell. He remained with the company until his retirement in 1992, concluding a long working life marked by dedication, dependability, and service.

Tom shared his life with his beloved wife, Mary Elizabeth Bookman, until her passing in 2010. Together, they built a strong and loving family grounded in hard work, integrity, character, and devotion to one another.

Tom was the proud father of Sam Suber, Tyrone Bookman (Sue), Yolanda Lee (John), Joyce Boyd, Jerry Caldwell (Leila), Cheryl Bookman, Deborah Williams (Frank), Cathy Malone (David), and Thomas “Tommy” Bookman Jr. (Kirsten). His legacy continues through his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and the many extended family members whose lives he helped shape.

Above all else, Tom was a family man. He worked hard throughout his life to provide for those he loved and to instill in his children the importance of integrity, personal responsibility, perseverance, and strong character. His example gave his family a foundation that will continue to guide generations to come.

Tom had a lifelong passion for the outdoors. He loved fishing and hunting, especially when those experiences allowed him to spend meaningful time with family and dear friends. He understood the value of fellowship, a good story, and time shared with the people who mattered most.

Always the comedian, Tom brought laughter wherever he went. His humor, warmth, and unmistakable personality endeared him to many. He had a gift for lifting spirits and creating memories that his family and friends will cherish for years to come.

Tom also shared an enduring friendship with his longtime best friend, William “Bill” Flowers. Bill’s friendship, loyalty, and tremendous support held a special place in Tom’s life and remained deeply meaningful to him and his family.

Tom was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Mary Elizabeth Bookman; his parents, Purvis and Luvenia Bookman; several of his siblings; and a son-in-law. He leaves behind a large and loving family, his dear friend Bill Flowers, and countless relatives and friends who will forever remember his strength, humor, wisdom, and generous spirit.

A life of 97 years cannot be measured only by dates or accomplishments. Tom Bookman Sr.’s life is best measured through the family he loved, the country he served, the careers he built, the values he passed forward, and the laughter he brought into the lives of others.

His presence will be deeply missed, but his love, lessons, and legacy will remain with his family forever.

Services will be held on Thursday, October 1, 2026, in Spokane, Washington.

·       Funeral service: 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Heritage Funeral Home, 508 N. Government Way, Spokane, WA 99224

·       Burial and military honors: 2:00 p.m. at Greenwood Memorial Terrace

·       Reception: 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at Heritage Funeral Home.
