September 26, 1923 - March 23, 2011

V. Darby "Bess" (Murray) Shively Obituary (Age 87) Bess died peacefully in her sleep Wednesday, March 23rd at her home in Spokane. She was born on September 26, 1923 in Shelbina, MO, the only daughter of Fred and Maggie Bierly Murray. Her parents and brother Proctor Murray preceded her in death. Her family moved west in the 1930's and with Bess came her beloved pony, Spot. She attended Sheridan Grade School, Libby Jr. High and graduated from Rogers High School in 1941. In 1945, Bess met a young airman Curtis Darby of Greenville, SC. They married and had two children, Carolyn and Donald. In later years they divorced. Following high school, she worked at Sunshine Biscuit Company where she formed life-long friendships with Virginia Allen and Chris Faydo. They have all been part of a Friendship Club that has lasted 30 years. The club met often and even vacationed together, taking road trips in motor homes. More recently, she was part of the Pinochle Club known for its rousing games with lots of laughter. She insisted no one ever cheated! She was active in the community and her children's lives. She helped establish Sheridan PTA's first kindergarten. She worked for Hart and Dilatush Pharmacy, Centennial Mills as a food demonstrator and Teamsters Local Union #582 and #690 as a data clerk. For many years she was a member of the Spokane Dahlia Society and won several prizes for her dinner-plate dahlias. Her garden and yard were always beautiful. Bess was musically gifted; she loved Lawrence Welk, and used her talents in many ways. She sang with "The Spokane Mother Singers", "Sweet Adeline's", and the Bethany Presbyterian Choir for over 20 years. She also played the piano at numerous events. She may be best known as the sassy piano player for "The Polka Dots", a popular local swing band playing in the 1970's at the Trentwood and Moran Prairie Grange as well as other Spokane venues. She met a great love, Harold Shively, during that time. They were married and had plans to travel the United States and Canada. However, prior to that happening, Harold suddenly passed away. With the help of her wonderful support system of friends, she was able to recover. Bess used the motor home Harold had given her as a surprise Valentine gift on her subsequent Friendship Club trips. Bess was known as an excellent cook and hostess. She had a true talent for putting people at ease and making them feel comfortable. She welcomed all and enjoyed the art of conversation and was an avid Seattle Mariners fan. The week prior to her passing, the Friendship Club met at the Moose Crossing Cafe. Her last goodbye to the Pinochle Club was hosting the March party the day before she died. She cleaned from top to bottom, polished crystal, and served wonderful treats. She spent her last days on earth with her dear friends. Her grandchildren Ashley and Justin played and important part in her life. Most recently, her 4-year old granddaughter, Holly Shailynn, succeeded in keeping her active and her spirit young. Bess is survived by her children; Carolyn Darby and Don Darby (Kassie Kozok); grandchildren Ashley Darby (Thomas Woods), Justin Darby, Holly Darby; step-grandson Paul Curtis; nephews Randy, Clifford and Greg Murray and Rodney Clellen; her friend of 67 years, Elsie Rinaldi, and her long-time friend of over 80 years, Sophia Pylar, and godsons Ron and Wayne Pylar. Charitable donations in her memory may be directed to Hamblen Park Presbyterian Church, 4102 S. Crestline Street, Spokane, WA 99223. A Memorial Service will be held at 1:30 PM, Monday, March 28th at Hamblen Park Presbyterian Church. In the spirit of Bess' hospitality, a reception and light lunch will be held following the service. At her request, a private family graveside service will be held earlier in the day. Mom, we are watching for increased
