Vern passed away October 2, 2011 and will be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend. He was born August 16, 1936 in Norwich, NY and was a graduate of Westmoreland Central High School. He enlisted in the US Army in 1953 and graduated from Michigan College of Mining and Technology with a B.S. in Civil Engineering and as a distinguished military graduate,he was commissioned a 2nd. Lieutenant. He graduated from the University of Missouri at Rolla with a M.S. in Civil Engineering as a Captain. He served in the New York Nat'l Guard from 1953-55, the Army Reserve 1955-59 and the US Army 1959-79. Vern retired a Lt. Col. in November 1979. During his long military career he served his country overseas during the Korean and Viet Nam Wars. He had a career as a civil engineer for the US Corps of Engineers and worked on the Alaska Pipeline from 1979-2001, until he decided to hang up his hard hat. Vern met and married Mi Cha, his wife in 1997. He was a longtime resident of Nine Mile Falls. He has always had a love for the outdoors, was an avid hiker, fisherman and hunter. He was a member of the American Legion and volunteered with the WA Dept. of Fish & Wildlife as a hunter education instructor. He was a part of the Nine Mile Falls Community Church family and will be missed by all of his friends and family. He is survived by his wife Mi Cha Smith; daughters Debbie (Steve) Brooks, Michelle (Jeff) Mace; son Michael (Eliana) Bell; grandchildren Emily and Zach Brooks, Nya and Kira Mace and Micah Bell; sisters Patricia (Shelly) Yon and Elizabeth Smith; brother Jim (Karen) Smith; several nieces and nephews. Funeral Service 1:00PM Sunday October 9th at Sunset Chapel, Fairmount Memorial Park.
