Virginia passed away on June 14, 2014 in Spokane, WA. She was born in Lodi, CA on October 4, 1922 to Hubbard and Gladys McWhirter. Virginia grew up in Wenatchee, Washington. She played the violin, was an Apple Blossom Princess and worked at the Liberty theatre where she met Morrie Nimmer, the theatre manager. She left Wenatchee to attended Central Washington University and then returned to Wenatchee and married Morrie Nimmer in 1940. Virginia and Morrie spent each summer at Lake Chelan surrounded by friends and family. Their eldest two children, Dick and Sue, were born in Wenatchee. In 1952 Morrie and Virginia moved to Spokane to open the Y Drive-In movie theatre on North Division. Morrie and Virginia had their youngest child, Cynthia, in 1952.
Virginia enjoyed a varied professional life in Spokane. She was the bridal wear buyer for the Bon Marche (Macy?s) stores in the region, which frequently took her to New York. In 1965, she opened a bridal boutique in Rusan?s, where she and her daughter Sue enjoyed working with many Spokane brides. In the 1960?s she taught Fashion Merchandising at Kinman Business School. In 1981 she opened two Diet Centers, one in North Spokane and another in Sandpoint, Idaho.
Her most beloved activity was playing golf, and she was a member of the women?s group at Wandermere golf course. Her golfing friends became her closest social circle. She met and married Bob Cardinal in 1974, and they enjoyed golf and travel until he passed away in 2000. She married Morrie Moen in 2001, and he preceded her in death in 2010.
Virginia is survived by her brother, Don McWhirter, who at age 94 continues to be a very active member of his church and community in Leavenworth, Washington. She is also survived by her children and their spouses, Dick & Sandy Nimmer (Seattle); Sue Nimmer Shaw and Mel Shaw (Spokane); and Cynthia Nimmer Cutler and Don Cutler (Spokane). She will be missed greatly by her grandchildren and their families: Rick Nimmer, Ty Nimmer, Corey Nimmer, Michele Shaw, Matthew Shaw, John Poppy, Sarah Ashenbrener, Nathan Cutler and Theresa Cutler. She will be remembered fondly by her 24 great-grandchildren.
Horizon Hospice was very helpful to Virginia and her family during her long illness. Please direct any memorial gifts to that wonderful organization. There will be a memorial service to celebrate Virginia?s life at Heritage Funeral Home on Saturday, June 21st at 11 AM.
