Wallace Runyon Eastwood Obituary
Wallace Runyon Eastwood, age 92, passed away June 5, 2014. He was born February 18, 1922 to Joseph Walter and Delila Fern Runyon Eastwood in Fort Scott, KS. Wallace was raised on a farm near Devon and Redfield, KS. He first attended Fort Scott High School and then graduated from Union Town High School in 1939 before attending Fort Scott Junior College. Wallace worked for S.H. Kress and Ben Franklin stores until October of 1942 when he was drafted into the U.S. Army. He was sent to Fort Warren, WY for basic training. After basic, he was sent to Geiger Field in Spokane where the 1881st Aviation Engineers Battalion was formed. In the spring of 1943, they sailed to Sydney, Australia and from there began their tour through the South Pacific attached to the 5th Air Force, building runways and aircraft revetments. Their stops included Port Moresby, Nadzab, Hollandia, Sansakar, Leyete, and Manila. After the war, Wallace returned home in December 13, 1945. He again worked for the Ben Franklin store in Baxter Springs, KS. In August of 1946 he married Velma Jean Ray from Spokane, WA. Together they returned to Spokane in March of 1948. Wallace went to work for Northwest Airlines in May of 1948 at Geiger Field. He spent the next 37 years as a Transportation Agent, retiring July 31, 1985. Together Wallace and Velma had two sons, David R. and Donald W. Eastwood who survive them. They are also survived by four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. A time of visitation will be held at Heritage Funeral Home on Wednesday, July 9, 2014 from 10 am to 5 pm and again on Thursday, July 10, 2014 from 9 am to 10:30 am. A funeral service will be held at Heritage Funeral Home on Thursday, July 10, 2014 at 11 am.
