Wanda Pearl Brown Obituary
On May 15, 2017 we lost our amazing Mother, Wanda Pearl Brown, at the young age of 89. She was born on February 4, 1928. She was raised in Millwood, graduated from John R. Rogers High School and later earned her B.A. degree in Christian Education and Psychology from Warner Pacific College. Mom played piano in church from childhood. She continued to play throughout her ministry with The Church of God. Wanda and husband, Calvin, served congregations in Mansfield, WA; Palmer, AK and Spokane, WA from 1954 through the early 1970s.
Wanda then pursued a career in development with Whitworth College and Fort Wright College. This experience led her to join The Multiple Sclerosis Society, where she worked passionately for patients and a cure for twenty years. She was a Fundraising Coordinator in Spokane, a Trainer for five years in ten Midwestern Chapters and later returned to Spokane become the Executive Director of the Spokane Chapter. After retirement, she joined St. Josephs Family Services, a Catholic family counseling center. She worked part time for six years as their Development Director. As single head of household, she also challenged herself to grow in her spiritual life. She was a member of Unity Church of Truth and New Life, a singles organization. She is preceded in death by her mother, Audra Keenan; father, Thomas Keenan; and the father of her children, Calvin Brown. Mom demonstrated frugality, patience, love, and wisdom to her four children. She also nurtured an adopted niece, five grandchildren, five great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. From them she gained the titles of Andy Wanda, Mamie, Grandma and Grams. They all were so lucky to be enchanted by her welcoming smile, wisdom, guidance and sparkling blue eyes. She is survived by sons, Curt (Tamara) Brown, Daryl (Vicki) Brown, Kevin (Deb) Brown and daughter, Kathy (Steve) Doran. Her whole family surrounded her with supportive love this spring as she traveled through the final stage of kidney failure. Every bloom reminds us of her unique blend of fierce determination and delicate grace. She may have come into this world as a tiny four pound baby girl, but she grew to be Mom the Mighty. We are blessed and charged to follow her lead! A Celebration of Life will be held on Tuesday, June 27th at 12:00 pm at Heritage Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating in Wandas name to The Multiple Sclerosis Society. She had so wished for a cure in her lifetime. Now perhaps one will be found during ours.
