Wanping Zhang

Wanping Zhang Obituary Wanping Zhang, age 64, passed away in Spokane, WA on August 9, 2019 after courageously fighting cancer for over four years. The youngest of five children, she was born in Beijing, China on June 17, 1955. Despite growing up during the Cultural Revolution, she was recognized as academically gifted and was selected to study English at Beijing Foreign Language School. Once the college entrance exams resumed, she attended Renmin University where she received her bachelor?s degree in English in 1982. She then taught the subject at the prestigious Peking University. In 1982, Wanping married her first love, Quanhua Liu at Peking University, and they came to the US in 1985 where Wanping studied English at SUNY New Paltz. A year later, she joined her husband at Duke University in North Carolina. Following the births of her son, Syrone and daughter, Sonia, Wanping took an immense interest in health care. She obtained a nursing degree at Durham Tech Community College in 1996, while working at Duke Medical Center. In 1996, Wanping and the two children moved to Spokane, WA to join her husband, a professor at Gonzaga University. After years of working as a nurse on the cardiac unit at Sacred Heart Medical Center, Wanping decided to challenge herself by returning to school at Gonzaga University and received her master?s degree in nursing sciences in 2010. She joined Inland Cardiology and subsequently Spokane Cardiology as a nurse practitioner, where she worked until 2018. Wanping enjoyed attending dinner gatherings with her friends and traveling the world with her family. She also generously volunteered her time to help those in the community. Wanping enjoyed listening to classical music, Chinese music, Celine Dion, and Whitney Houston. She liked cooking, nurtured a beautiful flower garden, and was fond of collecting stamps. Wanping is survived by her husband, Dr. Quanhua Liu; son, Dr. Syrone Liu; and daughter, Dr. Sonia Liu. Her passing is mourned by her family here and overseas, her neighbors, friends, and colleagues. She will be greatly missed and will always be remembered for her loving personality, calming presence, and care for others.
