Fisher, Wayne W. (age 86)
Wayne W. Fisher passed away at his home near the Keller Ferry on Monday, June 20, 2011. He was 86.
Wayne was born August 11, 1924 in the Johnson Hospital in Wilber, WA to C.V. and Mae (Jones) Fisher. He moved to Davenport, WA in 1926 when his father became Lincoln County Sheriff. He grew up there and graduated from Davenport High School in 1942. On November 11, 1942 he enlisted in the US Navy. He became a Quartermaster on the U.S.S. Ajax for 2 ? years in the Pacific Theater during World War II. Following his honorable discharge in 1946, he returned home to Davenport and married ?the girl next-door,? Violet M. Knappert on April 17, 1947 ? a girl he has known since 1930. He went to work for the Washington State Department of Transportation in 1949, and was a pilot on the Martha S at the Keller Ferry for 38 years, retiring in 1987.
He loved gardening and raised beautiful watermelons that melted in your mouth. He also enjoyed fishing and swimming with his children and grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife, Violet, his daughter Lisa Portch and husband John of Moses Lake, WA, his three sons, Tom Fisher of Omak, WA, Jay Fisher and his wife Linda of Creston, WA, and Matt Fisher of Spokane, WA, eight grandchildren and four great-grandsons, one brother Dale Fisher of Yakima, WA and numerous nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at Willow Lutheran Church on Saturday, June 25, 2011 at 11 am.
