Wayne Harry Lundberg Obituary
(Age 88)
Crossed the threshold into Heaven on April 5, 2010, with his family at his side. Wayne was born May 21, 1921, at Deaconess Hospital in Spokane, WA to Harry and Josephine Lundberg. The family lived on a farm near Deep Creek until Harry's death in 1924 when Josephine moved with her two young sons to the Cheney area. Wayne graduated from Cheney High School and attended Eastern Washington State College for a time before joining the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was stationed on the ship Mermidon near Iwo Jima and Guam. After the war, Wayne returned to the Spokane area and married the love of his life, Luella McFarland, in 1949. He worked as a letter carrier for the U.S. Postal Service for 32 ? years and then retired and enjoyed 11 years as a school bus driver for the Freeman School District before retiring completely. He was a member of the Grange for 72 years and the VFW for 63 years. Wayne and Luella lived in Spokane and Spokane Valley, and in 1964 they moved to a small farm in Valleyford, WA, where Wayne took great pride in his large garden, small orchard, and a menagerie of farm animals that included chickens, rabbits, cattle, horses, and even the occasional sheep or goose. An avid fisherman, Wayne spent many happy hours traveling with his family and friends to the coast or to nearby lakes with his camper and boat, getting special enjoyment out of fishing with his grandsons and laughing when they caught the bigger fish. He also enjoyed road trips around the western half of the U.S., excursions to Navy reunions in Illinois, and flying off to Hawaii with the extended family in 2000. In his later years, he took pleasure in playing pool with his friends, going to the casino for breakfast, playing cards with his grandchildren, and being with the family he was so proud of. Above all, he loved life with Luella at his side. Wayne was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Glenn, his stepbrother Kirby, and his beloved grandson James. He is survived by his wife of 60 years Luella; his son Jack (and Seelie) Lundberg; his daughters Janet (and Craig) Newton, Lori (and Dan) Veloski, and Paula (and Bill) Starr; his grandchildren Nick, Dave, Josh, Christian, Ben, Autumn, Kramer, and Whitney; his great-grandchildren James, Aleia, Isaiah, and Asher; and his stepsister Alice Holliday, all of Spokane. A private family celebration of life is planned. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice House, 367 E. 7th Ave., Spokane, WA 99202.
