October 21, 1930 - February 10, 2010

Wayne V. Chandler Obituary (Age 79) Born in Spokane on October 21, 1930, Wayne died in his sleep at home in Spokane on February 10, 2010. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Wanda; two sons, David of Las Vegas, NV, and Michael (Cheryl) of Spokane; two granddaughters, Maegan and Kayla; along with five great-grandchildren, Tre, Haylee, Cecelia, Dylan and Christopher. He is also survived by his brother, Carl Hagen (Janet) of Fort Collins, CO; and two sisters Diana Cain of Kirkland, WA and Shirley Vanderhoff (Gene) of Wenatchee, WA; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Wayne graduated from Lewis and Clark High School in 1948 and attended UW briefly before graduating from Eastern Washington State College with a degree in teaching. He taught at Finch Elementary, Glover Junior High and Shadle Park High School. He then returned to Eastern and received his degree in counseling in 1969. He was a counselor for a short time at Sacajawea Junior High before returning to Shadle Park where he was a counselor and Dean of Students until his retirement in 1987. He was particularly good with high school age students, always having an open ear and encouraging words. Wayne and Wanda met in 1955 on a trip to Seattle and were married on August 3, 1957 and started their family soon after. Wayne was all about his family and friends. His stories of growing up with his sisters and best friends were always the highlight of many gatherings. Wanda was the light of his life and he spoiled her in as many ways as he could find. He loved her dearly and took care of her right up to his last day. His sons were always a priority for him and he found the time to attend almost all of their many activities and even coached both of them for a while. When his grandchildren came along he adored them and always found time for them as well. He was very proud of his granddaughters, and when the great-grandchildren came along he had more loving and spoiling to do. Retirement was good for Wayne and Wanda. They got to spend time together traveling, golfing and relaxing at their cabin on Sacheen Lake. He kept himself busy with reading, woodworking and just puttering around the house. He also had a special group of golfing buddies called the "Lofters" that got together once a week. It is with great sadness that we say "Goodbye" to our Husband, Dad, Grandpa, Big Papa, Brother, Uncle and Friend. But we also know that our lives have been better because he was here for us and we will never forget him. Please join us for a Celebration of Wayne's Life on Tuesday, February 16 at 11:00 AM at the Sunset Chapel in Fairmount Memorial Park, 5200 W. Wellesley Ave. In lieu of flowers, please make memorial contributions in Wayne's name to the Ronald McDonald House, 1015 W. 5th, Spokane, WA 99204 or the Inland Northwest BloodCenter, 210 W. Cataldo Ave. Spokane, WA 99201.
