Winfred C. "Fred" Popejoy

Winfred C. "Fred" Popejoy Obituary (Age 96) Fred passed away at home surrounded by his family on June 8, 2018. He was born in Brighton, MO on September 30, 1921 to Luther and Jeanetta Popejoy. Fred grew up and attended school in Southern Missouri. It was there where he met the love of his life, Mildred Comer. Fred joined the Army on September 16, 1943 and served under General McArthur in the Philippines in WWII. He also served in the Korean War. Fred made a career in the Army, where he was a tug boat captain and got to take John F. Kennedy fishing. When he retired after 21 years he went to work for the Federal Government and became Field Director of Tactcom where he and mom traveled all over the U.S. doing projects. During his career there he got to do a project in Georgia and meet former President Jimmy Carter and his wife, they also had dinner on their farm. He and mom retired to Spokane in 1990, where the spent the rest of their lives. He was surrounded by his family until the end. Dad was preceded in death by his wife Mildred Popejoy, sons: Gerald Popejoy, Michael Popejoy, and Phillip Popejoy. Fred is survived by his children: Jeanette Kelly, Mark Popejoy, and Barb Stone along with son-in-law Jerry Kelly, daughter-in-law Linda Popejoy, daughter-in-law Diane Popejoy and daughter-in-law Vickie Fortuna Popejoy. He also leaves behind many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was loved very much and will be dearly missed. A Memorial Service will be held on Thursday, June 14, 2018 at 11:30AM at Heritage Funeral Home.
